Research follows a thesis.
Start with the operating or strategic reason a buyer could value this specific business. That may be a customer segment, capability, product, distribution route or an asset a capable operator can improve. Without this reasoning, a buyer list becomes a volume exercise and the owner loses control of relevance.
Prioritise organisations before individuals.
Public company, product, portfolio and market information can indicate whether an organisation has a plausible reason to care. Only then consider the professional roles connected to that reason. The goal is to find an appropriate path for a considered conversation, not to harvest contacts or imply a relationship that does not exist.
Keep outreach narrow and lawful.
Any contact must respect applicable law, platform rules, professional norms and the owner’s confidentiality boundary. Good research may lead to no outreach at all if the fit is weak. The quality measure is a defensible reason to engage, not the number of messages sent.
Use responses to refine the sale case.
Questions from a genuinely relevant buyer can expose what the brief needs to explain better. That feedback improves the process while keeping the owner in control of what is disclosed and what path is chosen next.
